Castles in Sabina
The landscape of Sabina is dominated by the hilltop towns, watched over by their original castles and fortresses. Most of the villages in Sabina were founded between 9th and 11th century A.D, when the population began to abandon old settlements in the valleys in favour of more easily defended hilltop positions. Almost the entire population lived within the walls and worked in the fields during the day. Nowadays, the variety of castles in Sabina ranges from abandoned, ghostly ruins, to beautifully renovated castles that accomodate weddings.
